I can relate to this situation as I have also faced stuttering many times but I have a solution for that. This guide is about fixing stuttering in gaming. So read it completely.

Stuttering is a malfunction of a graphics card or other PC hardware like RAM and CPU that causes lags, choppiness, and delays while you are playing games.

What Causes Stuttering in Game?

There are many reasons that can cause stuttering in games. It can be due to high FPS, your internet connection, outdated drivers, hardware issues, heated GPU, or settings in the game itself.

How to Fix Stuttering In Games?

Here are some solutions that will help you fix stuttering in games:

The first thing that I usually do is lower the resolution of the screen. If you have a higher resolution then to your monitor capacity then lowering the resolution can help you fix stuttering.

However, lowering the screen resolution can impact the image quality but it will surely help you fix stuttering in games. So, it is worth a try.

Using Anti-Aliasing

Anti-Aliasing is the feature that smooths the jagged edges of graphics. It improves the picture quality but it also puts a burden on your GPU.

So, if you are experiencing stuttering in games then turning off Anti-Aliasing can help you fix that.

Here is how to turn it off:

  1. Go to graphics settings
  2. Locate the Anti-Aliasing option
  3. Turn it off

However, you should not disable all the Anti-Aliasing features because some of them are very crucial for gaming. One of the examples is FXAA (Fast approximate anti-aliasing and MSAA (Multisample anti-aliasing).

You can figure out the best setting of supersampling based on your GPU. If you have a flagship graphics card then you can turn it up to 8x or even 16x. However, the best setting is between 4x to 2x that you can try.

FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) is a technology of AMD that is similar to DLSS. It is also an AI-based technology that automatically emphasizes the picture quality of the game. You can also use FSR if you are an AMD lover to reduce the traces of stuttering.

Lowering Texture Quality

When dealing with stuttering in games, another thing that you can do is lower the texture quality. The higher the texture quality, the more burden it puts on your GPU. So, lowering the texture quality can help you fix stuttering in games.

If you are new to overclocking then I would recommend you not to overclock your CPU and GPU. Overclocking is a delicate process and if you don’t do it right then it can cause permanent damage to your hardware.

Texture Filtering

The meaning of texture filtering is to improve the image quality of textures. It is also known as anisotropic filtering. It converts the 2D images into 3D models. So, it can also mitigate the signs of stuttering.

To lower the texture filtering, follow the steps:

  1. Open the graphics settings
  2. There you will see an option for Texture Filtering
  3. Open that icon and slide it down to a lower value

You can lower the texture filtering to improve game performance but it will result in bad image quality.

When searching for the color of a pixel, you must examine adjacent texels on the texture and/or other images from neighboring texels to determine an average. This is how texture filtering is done most simply because of the phrase “bilinear filtering.”

There are two terms: trilinear filtering and anisotropic filtering, which are more complex ways of saying “better.” Trilinear filtering takes into account the texel’s two mipmap levels above and below the pixel being rendered.

Mipmaps are lower-resolution versions of an image, used when the texture is viewed from far away so that the GPU doesn’t have to work as hard. By examining these four texels, trilinear filtering can provide more accurate color for the pixel being rendered.

Anisotropic filtering does the same thing as trilinear, but with many more texels. It examines texels from all mipmap levels above and below the one being rendered, weighting them according to how close they are to the pixel being rendered. This can provide even more accurate color for the pixel, but at a performance cost.

The trade-off with texture filtering is that the higher the quality, the more texels must be examined, which costs performance. So, you must choose the right balance of quality and performance for your game.

Close All Unnecessary Background Programs

There are a number of programs on PC that are continuously consuming RAM, CPU, and GPU resources in the background. These programs can cause stuttering in games. So, it is important to close all unnecessary programs running in the background.

To close all unnecessary programs, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys together and it will open the Task Manager.

In the Processes tab, look for all the unnecessary programs and click on the End task button to close them. Once you have disabled all the background programs, you can check the performance by restarting your PC.

Check Your Power Supply Unit

PSU (Power Supply)

A bad or low-quality power supply unit (PSU) can also cause stuttering in games. The PSU must be powerful enough to provide adequate power to all the components of your PC. Using a perfect PCU can lower the chances of stuttering so it is a good investment.

To check your PSU, open the case of your PC and look for the sticker on the PSU. There should be all information printed about your PSU including the model number, wattage, etc.

If you don’t find the sticker on the PSU then you can also check the manual of your motherboard. In the manual, you can check the all required PSU for your motherboard.

Once you know the model number and wattage of your PSU, go to the website of the manufacturer and look for that particular model.

There you can check the details about that PSU including the minimum and maximum wattage.

If you find that your PSU is not powerful enough then you should replace it with a more powerful one.

Update Your Graphics Drivers

Drivers play an important role in any program. Similarly, GPU drivers are very crucial for having perfect gaming visuals. So, it is important to keep your graphics drivers up-to-date.

You can use software to update the driver automatically or you can download them from the official website.

The manual way is to go to the website of your graphics card manufacturer and look for the latest driver for your graphics card model. Download the latest drivers and install them.

The automatic way is to use driver update software that will do everything automatically.
